FIRM HISTORY & PROFILE
The consulting practice of S. Harris & Co. was founded in January 2000, offering competent professional advice in the general domain of buildings and construction. The firm provides advisory and technical services, guiding property owners, architects, engineers, attorneys, contractors, preservationists, boards of directors, and institutional administrators through the myriad of building and construction-related problems.
S. Harris & Co. combines the professions of architecture, engineering, interior design, planning and law in such a manner that property owners and fellow professionals can avail themselves of the best and most relevant professional advice. Yet S. Harris & Co. possesses the flexibility, principal-involved service, and low overhead costs of a small company.
Our operating philosophy is simply that
our clients are our most valued assets. As professionals we
fashion ourselves as guides and advisors to assist the client through
the process of problem solution and execution. This is as opposed
to an all too common attitude among practicing professionals that our
ideas and our preferences supercede those of the client or, at a
minimum, are superior to those of the client. We view our job as
one of providing a client with reasonable and available options to their
presented dilemma, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each
option, recommending courses of action, and abiding by the decision of
the client as diligently as though such a preference were our own.
We believe that being a professional means and includes the art of
elevating the clients interests above our own, even when and
particularly when those interests may be in conflict. We do not
view our clients and their associated problems as means to ulterior
goals such as awards and fame; our clients, the solutions of our
clients' problems, and their satisfaction are ends in themselves.
With a total of more than forty years dedicated to design and historic preservation, the principal and his associates have provided technical and advisory services for such clients as the Eastern State Penitentiary, Glen
Foerd, Loudon, Memorial Hall, the Fairmount Park Art Association, Fairmount Waterworks, Historic
Fallsington, Historic Building Architects, Oehrlein & Associates Architects, the National Park Service, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the City of Philadelphia, the City of Wilmington, and the General Services Administration to name a few.
