B & B Foundry, Inc. Skylight Fabrication for the Eastern State Penitentiary

Roofing is a major source of overall failures throughout Eastern State Penitentiary. Re-roofing, either temporary or permanent, has become a primary objective in order to minimize the continual damage inflicted by water infiltration. These cast iron skylight covers, designed for the roofing restoration campaign on cellblocks 3, 4, & 7 were custom designed for each skylight along the cellblock, and specialty cast locally in Philadelphia at the B & B Foundry. The skylights historically provided light and ventilation to the inmates in their individual cells below.

For over 75 years B&B Foundry Inc. has been creating specialty castings, dimensionally accurate patterns, grinding, cleaning and finishing of metals. The capability of the foundry ranges from the fabrication of simple, lightweight pieces to major metal castings, including the restoration of historic ornamental work.
