DELAWARE INN CLIENT City of Trenton Department of Housing & Economic Development LOCATION Trenton, New Jersey STRUCTURE The Historic Delaware Inn located at 1024-1030 Lamberton Street in Trenton, New Jersey, is a Federal-style, three-story brick building which housed a tavern in its earliest conception in 1798. The structural framing consists mostly of timber joists, but there are several more recent reinforcements constructed of steel, reinforced concrete, and concrete masonry block. During our investigation, we learned that the overall condition of the building varied greatly which was attributable to the age of the building and the recent lack of maintenance. A portion of the timber framing was damaged and unsalvageable due to a roof collapse. CHALLENGE We were retained by the City of Trenton in 2006 to investigate and determine the structural condition of the Delaware Inn. The focus of the investigation was to assess and calculate the load capacity of the framing members in order to address any structural deficiencies and make recommendations. In order to reach the Owner’s goals of reopening the building as a living history museum, the loading capacity must be increased to withstand the building code requirements. Upon completion of the assessment, we proceeded with the preparation of design details and construction documents to implement the improvements. Construction is to begin in the winter of 2009. SCOPE OF SERVICE
The Delaware Inn is listed on the City and State Register of Historic Places. The building has been nominated for National status, and is awaiting approval. |
