STRUCTURE

Located in the University of Puerto Rico’s Rio Piedras Campus, the 1939 theater is a center for cultural productions not only within the university but also for the country. The Rio Piedras Campus is the largest of the 1903 University of Puerto Rico system. The theater, “El Teatro” in Spanish, is clad with ornamental glazed terra cotta and features long arcades and Spanish terra cotta roof tiles.

CHALLENGE

Restoring the clay tile roof sections to resist lift-off during tropical storms and that would not foster vegetative growth.


SCOPE OF SERVICE
  • Inspect and assess existing tile roof conditions and report findings to the lead architect.
  • Prepare construction documents for demolishing and replacing all terra cotta tiles.
SOLUTION
  • Research and locate quality terra cotta roof tiles for use on the building, including the most current technology in tie-down clips for safeguarding the roof during severe tropical storms and hurricanes.
