STRUCTURE
The FDR Maintenance Building was designed and constructed in 1919 to house Park facilities including a stable for horses used by the mounted police. The original building is divided into three sections: the front building, the court buildings, and the rear building with a later addition off the rear building.
CHALLENGE
The project architect for this renovation undertaking required structural services to facilitate the restoration and development of a maintenance plan as well as the design of new restroom facilities.
SCOPE OF SERVICE
- Conduct initial conditions assessment of the building, including exterior envelope, façade, structural system, roof, and drainage.
- Provide recommendations for structural improvements and repairs for the building as a whole.
- Provide structural services for the design of new restroom facilities.
SOLUTION
- We created a comprehensive assessment of the building describing the existing conditions of all the various elements and identified the deficiencies related to each element, recommended repairs, and assigned a degree of priority for each problem.
- The top four courses of the chimney are severely damaged and we recommended reconstructing this portion of the brick masonry.
- We provided foundation and slab sections and details for the new restroom facilities.
- Structural repair recommendations for the building include localized masonry repair, lintel and garage door header repairs, and drainage repairs.
HISTORIC STATUS
This building is listed as a contributing building to the historic district of FDR Park. |
