FORT MIFFLIN ON THE DELAWARE

LOCATION
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Fort Mifflin on the Delaware is a 150,000 square foot National Historic Landmark located on Mud Island in the Delaware River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  It was originally constructed in 1771, with subsequent construction activities taking place between 1795 and 1875.  It was decommissioned in the early twentieth century, and in 1962 it was designated an historic military fortification. The site is constrained by its proximity to the river as well as the airport, and is subject to a variety of restrictions for development.  The fort is a surrounded by stone ramparts as well as a moat, and is accessible via two points of entry.

Comprehensive restoration and reconstruction activities of the Fort are in the planning stages, and in the winter of 2010, S. Harris Ltd. assisted the Executive Director with defining an access plan for future construction activities at this site.  The existing timber bridge, access road and gate were assessed as the elements of the Eastern Approach to the site.  Our analysis took into account the potential of this approach for accommodating the traffic, transportation of people, materials and equipment that would be required for scope of work that will be required for the site-wide restoration activities at this site.
