STRUCTURE
The Sheep Barn located on Fox Chase Farm at 8500 Pine Road in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has had several additions built upon the original barn, circa 1832. The addition on the southern side of the barn has displaced dramatically, with the opposing walls moving away from one another. Our investigation and preparation of construction documents occurred in 2006.

CHALLENGE
We were retained by the Friends group to analyze and provide recommendations to stabilize the masonry walls.

SCOPE OF SERVICE
  • Investigated the structural instability of the exterior masonry walls.
  • Developed repair method and provided construction documents.
  • Contracted the work and administered construction.
SOLUTION
  • The repair method involved installing a series of through rods to tie the walls.
  • The unstable portion of the wall was reconstructed by removing and rebuilding the portion of masonry that was displaced.
  • The masonry reconstruction was minimal and utilized salvaged stone.
