STRUCTURE
Formerly known as the Trolley Car Barn and Power House, the Montgomery Maintenance Building was constructed in 1896.  The brick structure was built by William Wharton, Jr., as part of a 50-year concession to operate the Fairmount Park Gravity Passenger Railway in 1896.  The trolley cars were parked and repaired in the car barn up until the 1940s when the trolley service ended in the Park.

CHALLENGE
Selecting an appropriate asphalt shingle product to replace the deteriorated slate roofing and specifying the proper metal flashings and drainage system.

SCOPE OF SERVICE
  • Assess and report conditions to the Fairmount Park staff and the City of Philadelphia’s Capital Program Office.
  • Prepare design documents for the roofing and minor masonry repairs.
  • Provide an order of magnitude cost estimate for the client to facilitate budgeting for the work.
  • Provide construction documents based on comments for the approved work.
SOLUTION
  • Design roofing demolition and replacement to mimic the existing slate shingles.
  • Repoint and repair brick pilasters on the corners of the building.
  • All new galvanized flashings, gutters and downspouts.
  • Retain and repair existing slate shingles on the end dormer windows.
HISTORIC STATUS
Listed on the local register of historic properties within the Fairmount Park system.
