LOCATION

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

STRUCTURE
The three-story masonry building located on 9th Street in North Philadelphia was originally the Convent of the Sisters of St. Francis; associated with the neighboring St. Bonaventura Roman Catholic Church.  The building retained some of its original exterior and interior original elements, including newel posts, handrails, plaster ornamentation and tin ceilings.

CHALLENGE
Portions of the building had been improperly renovated in the past. Other portions of the building had been completely neglected.  The varying conditions required numerous repair schedules in order within the constraints of the minimal overall budget for the project.

SCOPE OF SERVICE
  • Prepare design documents for the renovation of the interior of the building accommodating fourteen bedrooms and comfortable common spaces.
  • Provide options for ADA access into the building and throughout the interior, including the lavatories, sleeping units on the second level, the elevator and all exterior ramps.
  • Present drawings to the Philadelphia Historical Commission staff as well as the Redevelopment Authority of Philadelphia for approval.
SOLUTION
  • Provided construction documents and management throughout the project.
  • Provided continuing assistance with numerous design changes outside the original scope requested by the facilities director.
